Cytology can help determine the timing of your dog's receptivity period. Once your dog has entered her season, within 9 days her estrogen levels will rise. This will then initiate a LH (lutinising hormone) surge and ovulation happens shortly after.

Vaginal cytology can help to determine the date at which your dog will ovulate, so you can inseminate your dog at the correct time and increase the chance of obtaining a pregnancy from the insemination. The rises in estrus changes the cells within the vaginal tract and this can be seen by performing a vaginal smear.
