Chilled or Frozen?
Deciding whether to chill or freeze is based on your needs - Here at Elite Kennel Fertility we provide both services to enable you to enhance your dog’s breeding programme.
A chilled semen collection involves assessing the quality after a sample has been taken the sample is then processed using our unique Elite Kennel Fertility extender. The sample is then cooled to be transported anywhere in the UK usually overnight, in temperature-controlled boxes. In comparison, a frozen semen collection is rather different. Samples are taken and initially assessed in the same way as chilled semen. We then use our own Elite Kennel Fertility freezing extender to ready the sample for freezing. All our clients get a full post thaw report once their dog’s semen has been frozen. This allows you to speak with your potential clients in detail about the quality samples they are purchasing and ultimately investing in. The samples are frozen down and stored in our secure storage facility on site through the utilisation of liquid nitrogen.
The main difference between these two processes is the longevity of the sample. When choosing a chilled collection, the sperm is recommended to be inseminated into the bitch within a 24 hour – 4-day period, for best results due to the motility decreasing over time. Frozen semen samples can be stored for years without having a decrease of post thaw motility.
Deciding between chilled or frozen can be difficult and it depends on your intention for the semen samples. Is it the preservation of quality genetics for years to come? Is it to aid global breeding programmes? Elite Kennel Fertility promote good ethics and high quality breeding. We feel it is important to preserve fit and healthy bloodlines in the hope to securing a bright future for dogs and their welfare. The future of dog breeding is yet unknown. However, preserving your high quality genetics now can help to preserve the future of all breeds.
