Why freeze your dogs semen?

Semen freezing involves collecting a semen sample from your dog and freezing it down at -196 degrees Celsius – this allows for the sperm to remain in a viable state meaning they will not degrade/perish. When it is required for use, it can be thawed back to the pre-frozen form and be use for artificial insemination.

Stud dogs are not always available to mate during the ovulation period of the bitch - having stored frozen semen at Elite Kennel Fertility  ready for use is beneficial to your stud dogs breeding programme, we can ship it with the UK and worldwide from our storage facility located in the heart of Shropshire. This frees up time around your working or showing diary and reduces the stress of traveling to recipiant bitch at a moments notice, in between a busy schuedal. Working or competitive dogs can be collected through quieter periods in your schedual and stored for use on a later date.

During a natural mating process, a dog’s entire amount of ejaculate enters the bitch. During a semen freezing procedure at our premises, we evalute the semen to establish its viability; once we have a full post thaw assessment complete we can then determine how many insemination doeses your dog has produced, in one ejeculate. A single dogs ejaculate can produce more than one insemination does which allows you to inseminate via artificial insemination more than once.

A main focal point of semen freezing is to keep high quality genetics in the gene pool. Through the freezing of multiple samples of semen, means that even if a beloved pet passes, their semen and genetics are still stored ready to use – therefore carrying on the bloodlines for many years. The vast level of high-quality studs that have samples stored at Elite Kennel Fertility shows how important this process is. Our sister company Gemini Genetics, can also take and store tissue samples for genetic preservation to allow for the production of high quality clones to aid the future in canine breeding to ensure only elite genetics are passed to future generations.

Once you have straws stored at Elite Kennel Fertility we can ship the samples to local vets or export abroad to bitches further away.
